The WCMC diabetes self-management center is dedicated to educating and improving the care of people living with diabetes. The program consists of ten hours of classroom and individualized training. Certified Diabetes Educator Julie Smith and other instructors are registered nurses and registered dietitians who are trained in caring for people with diabetes.
One hour of individualized assessment must be completed before attending the comprehensive classes.
Classes are taught in three segments, each taking three hours. Class topics include:
• How glucose and insulin work in the body
• Exercise and diabetes
• Avoiding hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
• Medical conditions and complications related to diabetes
• Nutrition: Healthy choices and counting carbohydrates
• Monitoring blood sugars and regulating blood glucose
• Oral medications and insulin
• Managing stress and using coping techniques
• Sick day management
• Meal planning
Classes meet the second, third, and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

These classes are approved by the American Diabetes Association as meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education.
