White County Medical Center offers the Lap-Band System to patients who meet the criteria for weight-loss surgery. Potential candidates must be unable to achieve weight control with other approaches, motivated, and obese (more than 100 pounds overweight with a body mass index of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 and significant disease processes).
Obesity affects quality of life, and for some it’s a matter of life and death. Obesity spares no organ system and is associated with an increased risk of many diseases, including diabetes, heart conditions, sleep apnea, and some types of cancer.
The gastric band is an inflatable silicone prosthetic device which is placed around the top portion of the stomach via keyhole laparoscopic surgery.
The preoperative program includes consultation with an RN. Potential patients will receive direction on what steps to take to prepare for the surgery and how to seek insurance coverage.
The lap-band surgery is a life-changing event. For successful outcomes, patients must be willing to make a serious commitment to both diet and exercise.
After the surgery, patients will be monitored for five years. Patients have the option of a lifetime of support services from WCMC.
